The symbols for the four Evangelists are located on the exterior of the church building. Each mosaic was designed by Tom Cullen of Cullen's Art Glass located in Dublin, Ohio. The symbols - the eagle, winged lion, the winged man and the winged ox -- are taken from the description of the heavenly liturgy in chapters 4 and 5 of the Book of Revelation, and must have been suggested by the vision of Ezekiel, although Ezekiel's description is most likely of cherubim. These emblems play a very important role in the art of the early Middle Ages.

Corporal Works of Mercy Days of Creation Four Evangelists
Tour photo Matthew
The winged man is a symbol of St. Matthew because he began his gospel with a geneology of Jesus.
Tour photo Mark
A winged lion is a symbol of St. Mark the Evangelist because of his clear proclamation of Jesus' Resurrection. His Gospel narrative begins with the "Voice of one crying in the wilderness" and this suggests the roar of a lion.
Tour photo Luke
The winged ox is a symbol of strength, service and patience. It was something use in Renaissance art to represent the nation of Israel. A ox, the animal of sacrifice, is a symbol of St. Luke because he stresses the atoning sacrifice of Jesus.
Tour photo John
The high-soaring eagle is the emblem of St. John because in his narrative he rises to loftiest heights in dealing with the mind of Christ.
